The programme opens with Dvořák's spine-chilling symphonic poem based on a Czech folk tale.

Prokofiev's best-known piano concerto is a highly effective blend of dynamic pianism and swooning melodies. The busy first movement is followed by a set of fantastic variations on a march-like theme, while the spectacular finale builds up enormous energy.

Arguments continue over the true meaning of Shostakovich's most performed and recorded symphony, but it remains a work of extraordinary emotional and musical tension, poised on a knife edge between survival and disaster.
