We are delighted to welcome the new Chief Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Mark Wigglesworth, in a programme which highlights connections in Viennese music across generations.

Brahms was an enormous admirer of Johann Strauss II, and himself inspired the Second Viennese school of Berg and Schoenberg.

Berg's last completed work is an emotion-packed farewell to the daughter of a friend, who died young. From the opening folksong depicting the innocent girl, to the final pages, where an angelic violin soars above a consoling Bach melody in the orchestra, it is an unforgettable piece.

Brahms' radiant Second Symphony was written while on holiday in the summer of 1877, and is predominantly warm, lyrical, and tender, building to an explosion of joy in the finale.
